An incredible dream for local couple!!

I’d heard something vaguely on the radio, but didn’t realise that the dream that became a reality was one that happened to a local couple!!

Our local paper reported on the incredible dream come true. Such a wonderful and amazing gift by an insurance company, through one of our popular radio stations, The Hits, helping a family through a difficult time….I have added the article from the paper……

Dreams come True The Post 20 July 2016

Waiting for perfection….

Mercer cheese story April 2016

A story in our local paper tells of our local cheese maker, Albert Alferink, who owns and runs Mercer Cheese along with his wife.

Some years ago, a news item and video were broadcast telling of Albert and his award winning cheeses.

The Mercer Cheese store was opened in 1981, and Albert will be able to celebrate his more than 35 years in business.

If you are heading south from our area, toward Hamilton then, check out the business hours and pay a visit to try some wonderful cheeses!!

Franklin Primary Schools Triathlon – a great day!!

The local primary schools in and around Franklin, today held their Triathlon at Clarks Beach.

This is an event supported by local schools, Fulton Swim School, the Auckland Council, Surf Life Saving NZ, local police and many more and helps to encourage the kids from our local schools to enjoy taking part in a sport that is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing!! It also gives the kids a chance to challenge themselves in something that gets them moving and helps to create competitiveness in this area.

The event takes up to 400 school aged competitors as well as having the help and support of 500 + parents and supporters from the community.

A volunteer committee to organize and run the event is set up with all proceeds from the Triathlon being reinvested in sports in the Franklin Area.

Every child who participates is awarded with a medal, a certificate and a goodie bag for completing.

The morning proved to be fantastic weather wise and support wise. although I think that the kids may have found the sea water a wee bit cool!

All of the children did a fantastic job and it is  kudos to them and their families  efforts to make this such a great event!! 🙂

Franklin Taste at Karaka…..

Today the Franklin Taste show was on at the Karaka Sports Grounds, with a pretty good turnout, and apparently Mayor Len Brown arrived, not sure where he was, but it was mentioned that he WAS there (maybe that bit will show on telly tonight?)

Franklin Taste 2015 Balle (14)So, although not all of the stands were foodie stands, there was quite a mix of mainly local Franklin stands, and here are a few photos to get a “Taste” of what was on show.
Along with our own Balle family’s “Chip off the old Block” yummy potato chips,

Chip Off The Old Block potato chips are only ever made with Balle family grown and supplied potatoes which the chip makers then only ever cook in sunflower oil and then only ever sprinkle with natural seasonings. When they’re Flat Cut Chips they’re sliced thick with their skins on and when they’re Kettle Chips they’re cooked slow and long in batches for a bigger crunch.

we also had Sonja’s Taste of Austria stand (based in Tuakau) with some delicious sweet “Cremeschnitten” – Franklin Taste 2015 cremeschnitten from Sonjas taste of Austria

Tuakau Hotel, Awaroa Vineyard and Cottage, Mercer Cheese
and more had a presence along with delicious cold pressed juice from Soul Organics, rich in nutrients and tasty too, bringing their product to the Auckland market. I am NOT much of a veggie eater particularly, but the “Detox Dude” organic, carrot, apple and lime drink was very delicious. It is packed with vitamins A, K and potassium and is a great source of energy for the body. My friend tried the “Energiser Bunny” – organic carrot, beetroot, apple and spray free ginger, and was impressed by this mix too! – amazing for heart health and a great source of nitrates with anti inflammatory properties. Look out for this brand in our region!

In the non foodies range, Glenbrook Lavender Oil Co had a range of beautiful smelling lavender soaps, along with shampoo, conditioner

Autumn is here – and no slowing down!!

P1000532 Autumn is officially upon us but that doesn’t slow things down here in Franklin Country – a region also known as Auckland’s Southern playground – where Auckland meets the Waikato!!

For those car and vintage vehicle enthusiasts, Franklin’s main town of Pukekohe is home again to the ever popular Swap Meet, where all things vehicle related should be able to be found – whether in the original state or a reproduction, there should be something there and very likely all manner of other items too. Should be THE place to be!!

we have our very own Taste Franklin happening, This should be an amazing event showcasing the wonderful food that we produce right here on the edge of Auckland!
Fish - Taste Franklin

Us locals know that we live in an area that grows, produces, cooks, carves up, bakes and ferments some of the very best stuff that we consume here in Godzone yet do you always buy locally? What about people moving into the area – do they know what’s available? Do you know about cheesemakers, butchers, growers, breadmakers, fishermen, winemakers and brewers plus so many other culinary magicians that are found around the corner, a few streets down, or a short drive away (we are semi-rural after all)..

Check out the newsbeat piece here about this event.

So if you hadn’t considered Franklin – (where Auckland meets the Waikato) before now, this IS the time to get on over to our patch and celebrate – history, our own home-grown everything and so much more

200 cyclists expected in Pukekohe

A news report in one of our local Franklin papers, states that we can expect around 200 cyclists to arrive in Pukekohe for the conclusion of this years BDO cycle challenge and will see corporate teams vying for a $100,000 prize!!

The Wellington to Auckland Cycle Challenge is a revival of the Dulux – the ultimate cycle race back in the 1960-1980s that used to attract cyclists from around New Zealand and overseas.

The event, organised by Dynamo Events, was born out of a love of cycling by former Olympic and Commonwealth cyclist and former Dulux competitor, Stephen Cox.

Cycle through the heartland of New Zealand in the seventh annual BDO Wellington to Auckland Cycle Challenge, Sunday 15 to Saturday 21 February 2015.
